SD'S POWER ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
YEAR ENDING MARCH 2023

BACK TO GROWTH !

The year 2022-2023 was the happiest year of the recent times for Power Electronic Industry. Most grew while a few failed to do so. Overall, the  industry grew by 8.10%

The industry netted revenues to the tune of INR 7275.13 crore. This is exclusively the end-user sales figure. However, the over all industry revenue was estimated at INR 7500.00 crore approx.

The reason why the total industry revenue is much higher than the actual end-user sales is because many a companies procure finished products from others & brand them as theirs, and our survey team gets the turnover from both, resulting in duplication. With nearly 241 companies responding to our survey, giving us the information this year, we sought in great detail, knowing fully well how much the company has manufactured with excise paid. And also trying to find out, which companies procure finished products from others & brand them as theirs, an exercise which we have been doing only since more then a decade now, we did all of it again to give continuity to the process.  Out of 241 companies responding only 106 companies were awarded with SD Ratings.

Most companies have started production to the full throttle,  We are sure the figure which we have arrived at i.e., the actual end-user sales revenue of INR 7275.13 crore mark will be crossed in current fiscal 2022-2023. There will be no wonders if growth ends up over 12% plus in 2023-24 as the trends indicate. Growth wise it was a good year with most of the majors growing.

A few companies didn't do as expected due to some internal regions, overall the trends has been positive. Those doing customized deployment were short of orders.

Revenue-wise: This year 2022-23, the industry was showed a growth of over 8.10% over the previous fiscals' revenue went up  to nearly 7500.00 crore of revenue was recorded. A clear indicator of a growth over past couple of years.

Bharat now is the  economy fastest growing economy in the world amongst all countries as per World Bank growth index published at the end of third quarter of 2023.

Volume-wise: Industry sales also went up to 8.40% over previous year in volume terms. This clearly indicates shrinking margins in cases of orders obtained thru tenders and sales to SI's. One must be clear in mind that this is a very good performance considering the stiff competition and the squeezed margins in view of hammering the companies got during the global economic meltdown & currently facing INR slide and a strong dollar value.

However, Softdisk has been long campaigning for companies to look for Bottom Line then Top Line.

Of the total revenue of 7500.00 crores, Online UPSs accounted for 94.3% while Offline & line interactive UPS show a drop in growth of 9% in volume terms and not have not been a significant contributor in decrease in revenue term, it increasingly becoming a low margin a high volume game. Modular UPSs have become are picking up fast in especially in the ITES market & many Indian UPS manufacturers have also ventured in to this space. Smaller UPS companies have opted for SPCUs. In revenue term they contributed nearly 6.76% to the GDP.

Cooling solutions, Batteries for Home UPS & Inverters were not considered. Sale of SPCUs has definitely picked up. Most MSME level UPS manufacturers are moving towards SPCUs. Of the total revenue organized sector accounted for nearly 91% while 9% came through semi organized and unorganized sector.,

SD FINDINGS

Softdisk went about finding the state of the industry and also how deep they were influenced as India continues to establish itself as the fastest growing economy becoming 5th largest economy in the world . The first quarter of the financial year 2023-24 was far better as compared to last fiscal. Projects have been coming up in almost all areas but the demands continues to boost, with Atma Nirbhar Bharat Campaign taking up and start-ups coming up in large numbers (Over1200 UNICORN in 2022-23) have increased the demand for having pure continues power. The overall effect is putting expansion plans on a fast track. However, things will further improve in third & forth quarter with government taking lots of measures and investing a lot of infrastructure and defense corridors. Make in India initiative is paying rich divident. Growth for big IT, ITES, Hyper-scale Data Center, Big Data Computing & India being the largest UPI user base has given Telecom segment a very big boost making it increase its tower infrastructure. India has its own 5G infrastructure &  NAVIK positioning systems ready to replace GPS.This has kept mid segment market for UPS going well (up-to 200KVA). A small power data center with power requirement of 25, 75 to 200KVA rating are also going as per plans.

Softdisk believes that more and more people are moving towards Solar. Some have even manufactured and installed Grid Sharing Solar UPS, with hybrid charge facility (Photovoltaic & Mains). Vertical wise bifurcation for year ending March 2023.

Amongst the UPS major, Vertiv-Liebert with 14% share leads followed by APC-Schneider 13%, Legrand Numeric 11%, Fuji Electric 12%,  AVO 5%, Hitachi 7% Eaton 2%, Socomec 1%, Techser 2%, and  PowerOne 2%, While others (Including Indian biggies like  Hykon, Uniline etc.)  account for rest.

SD ESTIMATES:

Softdisk now predicts a growth over 12 % plus percent  that the total industry revenue will cross INR 8100 crore approx by March, 2024. We talked to Industry Captains trying to know what the industry leaders thought of a future ahead. Many had little or no doubt to what Softdisk has predicted earlier, even though this response and continued to have faith on Softdisk analyses, more so the decision making utility it has become to the major clients. Rosy future awaits all.

Softdisk remains committed for transparent reporting, in-depth analysis & as always throwing up forecast & estimates which you can Rely Upon For Sure.

According to Mr. Subodh Gupta, CMD, Microtek International, The progress of the Power Backup industry, be it Home Ups, UPS for computers or ONLINE UPS for critical applications has been constant and growing. As by the government's initiative of making power available to every corner of India, the demand for power has also been growing, so is the need for more stable and uninterrupted power.  He says that, yes we are aligned with your predictions, in the current scenario some companies are growing at 15-20% and some in single digit. At an overall level the average growth will approximately be under the range of 10 to 12% as it has been growing for the last few years.

Online UPS have a huge market space in the market, he says we are already  focusing on "Make in India'' initiative and contributing well towards Atma Nirbhar Bharat. We have already started manufacturing many models in our  State of the Art plant in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, equipped with the latest machinery & Testing equipment. To widen our customers base, we are focusing on adding more models as per market requirement and even customizing them for specific requirements.

On the issues of Rooftops & renewable sources of energy. Mr. Subodh Gupta  believes that the coming decade belongs to Renewable Energy, this is clear to us. Keeping the environment  healthy is the global need and all the governments cross the globe are shifting dependence on non polluting renewable sources of energy. FDI will surely give a big push to the sector, but it seems the big players will benefit most out of it. Solar Rooftops are being used more and more in villages and rural areas as the respective state governments are also providing subsidies to promote them.

SD has been a binding force for this industry as Dr. Sai has been passionately involved in each and every minute details. Every year he puts extra effort to get the stalwarts of the industry on one stage during the SD Awards event. The contribution of SD and Dr. Sai is immense and cannot be measured in words. We wish him success in the years ahead.

Switching AVO is of the opinion is that it may be around 10%, next financial too primary reason being time lost in General Elections.  Mr. Rabindra Agarwal, MD, AVO laments at that we are already on track of manufacturing within our factory and have established resources for fulfilling the need for ATMA NIRBHAR BHARAT.

This has given us a specific advantage, as at AVO we are able to meet the requirements of Govt and Banking sector to a large extent. A lot of background work is going on the technical side well supported by our management. I personally look forward to increased market share for AVO in 3/3 in the months and years to come.

Softdisk is working has been working as a glue for over 3 decades now bringing all competitor under one roof every year. His work is amazing that we salute his team for doing it year after year.

According to Mr. Rajaram Ramamoorthy; after the Pandemic, most businesses that survived the pandemic have started seeing an upswing in business. Growth of Data Centers in India and the increasing manufacturing activity and growth of retail business will need clean and uninterrupted power, which will be drivers for the growth of the UPS market. With the economy being vibrant and India being a credible and viable alternative to China, the investments in India will continue to be on the upswing. UPS being a very necessary product to any business, will be market to be watched.

Three Phase UPS Systems' demand has been increasing in the past and the demand is expected to continue due to the growth of the Manufacturing, Healthcare, Data Centers and other verticals. E&C has been catering to its customers fir their 3 phase requirements and will use this opportunity to increase its presence and business in this area.

Promoting roof top solar plants which can eliminate the need to cut down green cover and forcing migration is a good alternative. Generating power for self consumption through roof top solar plants reduces the stress on the grid as well as power costs for consumers. With cost of solar systems coming down, the growth of solar rooftops with Lithium battery systems will be a growth area, which will help the environment as well.

SoftDisk has been focusing on the Indian UPS Industry for over three decades. While International reports focus on Multinational UPS companies, SD's focus is on recognizing the Indian UPS Companies as well. SD's annual UPS Day is an event most looked for by the Indian UPS fraternity as it brings together all the Indian UPS Companies to one platform to recognize their contribution to the UPS market, exchange views and ideas from Industry leaders, and also address industry related issues which need attention and cooperation. SD is the only "Indian UPS Industry Analysis". I expect that for more visibility for SD to become higher, internet presence is key. SD should be seen as a India centric UPS analysis along side foreign research reports, which list only MNC Players.

According to Mr. S. Sabapathy Micron Systems & Controls Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore,  the energy industry in India weather be regular power or the renewable (Solar, wind or Biomass) has been witnessing a steady growth post Covid, it has been a good last year and the trend continues. I personally expect that we should able to touch double growth for sure, in-spite of difficultly in component procurement. We anticipate a growth rate in our industry ranging from 15% to 17.5%. In the upcoming financial we are all set for a big boost in turn over terms contributing towards the development of the nation both in terms of providing employment & revenue.

Soft Disk is not just a Magazine but it is the Business partner for our power Industries. An agency which provides accurate data which helps us to redefine and develop our business strategy in right direction. As they say "Data is the Business!" and  Business means good correct data. We congratulate Softdisk for the achievement of 30 years award ceremony as uninterrupted as we call our industry we may fail but Softdisk wont.  Our  best   for the year ahead. May they continue like this forever.

As per Mr. Christo George, MD, Hykon; The projected growth by Softdisk is indeed quite realistic. This growth is likely driven by increasing demand for clean and sustainable energy solutions, supportive government policies, and ongoing technological advancements in renewable energy.

As India is emerging as one of the World's largest economies, there will be a significant demand for Online 3 phase UPS for industries. The increasing prevalence of IoT-connected equipment in industries makes their equipments more sensitive. The adoption of a single, higher-capacity 3phase Online UPS solution for entire factories is gaining popularity, eliminating the need for separate UPS units for each piece of equipment.

To meet this demand, Hykon is in the process of establishing a new manufacturing facility to produce higher-capacity 3 phase online UPS units equipped with Lithium battery packs, offering capacities of up to 500 KVA.

The new Hykon plant, is implemented a state-of-the-art bi-directional Solar UPS system with Lithium battery packs. This innovative set up enables the entire factory to operate solely on solar energy while simultaneously charging the batteries. Any surplus energy generated during daylight hours will be seamlessly integrated into the grid. At night, the factory will draw power from the stored energy within the battery, ensuring uninterrupted operations. This cutting-edge solution is called Solar Battery Energy System (S-BESS).

Government of India has devised a comprehensive roadmap for the next five years, emphasizing the widespread deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in both industrial sectors & energy distribution companies. In line with this vision, Hykon is establishing a BESS Plant in their new factory to showcase this pioneering technology. They envision a future where numerous industries and institutions become self-sufficient energy producers. As the cost of Lithium battery packs continues to decrease, this approach becomes increasingly cost-effective compared to procuring electricity from conventional energy distribution companies.

SOFTDISK has played a crucial role in bridging the gap between companies and customers in the green energy sector, serving as a vital glue for the industry. To strengthen its presence further, it can continue to facilitate knowledge-sharing platforms and networking opportunities to foster a cohesive pure, green energy, & big data community.

Mr. Narayan Sabahahit, MD, Techser Power Solutions is some what conservative in his prediction, he believes that the industry could see CAGR of anywhere between 8.5% to 10% over the next 5-6 years(2030)

Though he also aggress that there is a lot of Demand for three phase UPSs. Which are gaining momentum. In this segment again, Modular UPS are becoming common in many sectors including BFSI, Education segments. To take advantage of "Make-in-India' initiative, we are increasing the capacity of our manufacturing units.

With respect to renewable energy substitutes for conventional UPS, it is gaining importance especially in Government BSFI/Education segments and also in government/FDI supported projects in rural/semi-urban areas. On similar lines rooftop systems are also increasing in Governmental building rapidly. In private segments there is surge in renewable energy deployments in units/factories located in tier 3 town/cities due to paucity & uninterrupted power from ESCOM's grid. And as per SOHO market people could be waiting for more efficient systems and also for reduction in prices of systems and allied components of renewable energy deployment.

Soft Disk is doing fabulous job in increasing awareness of socio-economic &  environment issues related to Energy sectors amongst  UPS/IT/ITES fraternity. SD is bringing out valuable knowledge-rich articles couples with surveys which helps users of our products & services to partner with right people and products.

According to Mr. Sumanth Kumar, President UMDA, & MD, PNS Systems Pvt. Ltd., believes that any growth above 10% is a positive and welcome indication, considering the fall-out of economic slowdown globally.

We believe in manufacturing indigenous products and we also appeal to our clients to encourage Make in India products. While costing challenges and competition still persist on imported China made UPS systems, we still appeal and promote Made in India UPS Systems due to the inherent advantages that we can offer.

The biggest advantage of Made in India UPS Systems is the quick turn-around time in case of any service issues, due to the easy and in-house availability of spares. The challenge that Chinese made UPS systems installed in Indian space is the lack of availability of spares and extremely high AMC costs, as the customers tend to get advised to simply replace the existing UPS system, which again translates to a huge capital expenditure.  However, we are working hard to upgrade our designs, especially in magnetics, for reduction in cost and size.

Being in the domain of green energy/ solar roof top solutions along with our domain of UPS / back-up power solutions - is an added advantage and a win-win for all - the suppliers, the consumers and the environment too. This is because of the fact that solar roof top solutions are a very closely associated vertical for us in the power electronics sector. Due to the same, offering quality design and installation services in the domain of rooftop solar solutions definitely been an added advantage in terms of sales.

Softdisk which goes synonymous with Dr. Sai Krishnan has been the only platform where the entire UPS as well as Solar fraternity is brought together every year and recognised for their contribution to the industry. Softdisk not only has been motivating but also being a bridge among Manufacturers to complement their business.

According to Mr. R K Bansal, MD, Uniline Energy Systems, Regarding the predicted industry growth of 10.8 to 12% for FY 2023-24, we believe it aligns well with our internal projections. We anticipate a robust growth trajectory in the energy systems sector, driven by technological advancements and an increased focus on infrastructure development. Uniline Energy is strategically positioned to capitalize on this growth, leveraging its expertise in providing efficient power solutions. The goal is to contribute significantly to this industry's expansion while maintaining the highest standards of quality and innovation.

Emphasis on three-phase Online UPS and the "Atma Nirbhar Bharat" initiative is indeed promising. Uniline plans to enhance local manufacturing and expand our customer base through tailored products. Building strong partnerships and a robust distribution network is integral to our strategy, enabling us to connect with more customers and provide them with tailor-made solutions. Uniline has been focusing on high technology segments of the industry including Defence & Research organizations. Where our systems have been well accepted & appreciated.

Green energy and renewable sources are essential pillars for a sustainable future. Uniline recognizes the importance of environmental responsibility & anticipates a significant boost in sales as a result of increased foreign direct investment in the renewable energy sector. We are committed to eco-friendly solutions and are actively involved in projects related to solar power and other sustainable technologies. Rooftop utilization is a commendable approach to reduce the environmental impact, promote energy independence, and mitigate deforestation & rural migration.

Softdisk's role as a bridge between companies & customers is instrumental in fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within the industry. To further enhance this role, Softdisk could consider facilitating industry-specific forums, conferences that bring together stakeholders from various sectors. This would create a platform for meaningful discussions, idea exchange, & networking opportunities. By acting as the glue that binds the industry as a whole, Softdisk can play a vital role in driving innovation, growth, and cooperation.

In India, where the IT and digital industries are at the forefront of enabling seamless digitization, the digital revolution is well under way, and the nation is quickly establishing itself as a significant player in the digital economy. The switch from antiquated to modern digitalized processes has resulted in a major expansion of the sectors like, IT & ITES, BFSI, Healthcare & Pharma, Manufacturing and so on. We at Fuji Electric anticipate this rapid growth of these sectors will further boost the demand of our power backup solutions, as industry will also grow well over 10% laments Mr. Shivaji Wagmare, MD, Fuji Electric.

In order to support the rising demand for our product and solutions from several segments, we recently invested over 150 Cr adding up over 65000 Sf of additional space of a brand-new, cutting-edge facility in Chennai. This investment is a part of our plan to strengthen our India operation and support IN INDIA FOR INDIA roadmap. We intend to end the fiscal year (FY23) with a Y-o-Y growth of over 30%.

India's economy is undergoing a significant digital transition, and we note significant growth in the data center sector, which is followed by other core segments. This is because India is predicted to experience rapid expansion in the production of a variety of high-end electronic equipment, machinery, and industrial settings.

As a result, we believe that the markets for 3 Phase Online UPS systems in Indian power electrical systems will grow beyond what we have already seen since more enterprises will go digital, which is essential for achieving the necessary uninterrupted power supply. Additionally, tier two and tier three cities, previously lacked this kind of infrastructure, are now experiencing significant improvements due to the growing penetration of the IT and IoT industries in those cities. Hence, the market will continue to expand and will do so in the future due to trends toward increased digitalisation and an increase in Indian manufacturing.

Fuji Electric's agenda is to facilitate investment, and bring in state-of-the-art technology and innovation here and become a global manufacturing hub. Produced locally for global audience - is the agenda with which we are moving ahead. We are bringing out new products to match the growing demands of the customers and so, we are expanding rapid growth in our customer base.

As part of Fuji Electric mid-term plan for India provides a roadmap to strengthen our local presence by ramping up our Manufacturing setup, localise R&D and bring solutions designed and developed in India for Indian Customers.

As the leading voice of the power electronics sector in India with a particular focus on the Power Backup category, we have a relationship with Softdisk that dates back over 2 decade. According to Mr. M R Rajesh, MD, Powerone Micro Systems Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore 2023-24 is a very significant year in the UPS industry. India wanted to be a parallel force to China in Manufacturing. So Indian UPS market has to invested heavily on its Manufacturing facilities & Factories. The growth possibilities are tremendous. As an Indian Manufacturer out challenge to compete with global products and supply world-wide, will be tested. We have started our initiatives in those directions already. Now in India many UPS companies have taken over by MNC companies & these companies have grown in big way due to big investment & very professional management.

Powerone which is already largest Hybrid SPCU Manufacturer from India has built up a huge four storied facility to bring all manufacturing activity under one roof which include UPSs a very high capacity, UPSs (Three & Single) Phase, Energy Storage Systems(ESS), Static EV Chargers, Frequency Converters, Hybrid SPCU, Grid-tie SPCU, other SPCU plus other customized products  depending on the orders. Lamenting on Softdisk Rajesh says, our relation with Softdisk started right from the beginning, which is now over 3 decades old. Being one of the most unorganized sectors, those days, Softdisk, has predominantly contributed to find out and Analyze the size of the market. We recall the time invested by the Softdisk team to understand our kind of business over the years.  Softdisk plays a major part in the industry with its novel ideas of product introduction, Data Collection and analysis. They act as a glue to keep the industry together where even the biggest of competitors have some thing to share. Softdisk also extend its team to reach the upcoming companies to make sure that the industry always gets its attention. There humbleness lies in listening to even the newest of company with rapt attention.

Mr. U B Shenoy, Director, Alpha is one of the  is of the opinion is that it may be around 12-14%. He further laments at that we are already on track of manufacturing within our factory and have mobilized resources to meet the MAKE IN INDIA INTIATIVE fulfilling the need for ATMA NIRBHAR BHARAT.

A lot of background work is going on the technical side well supported by our management. I personally look forward to increase the market share Alpha and put all our efforts to market not only in India and also exports to countries like Britain, Africa (Nigeria & Lusaka Zambia) and the Gulf.

Tremendous efforts of Softdik to bring all the industry under one roof and hats off to them for achieving this even during Covid-19 Pandemic years.

CONCLUSION :

Currently, UPS business is getting & bright due post pandemic. Companies should be prepared to target the potentially high growth segments with right quality products may benefit more. Service support and having good  market penetration will also very be useful while some may struggle to catch up. Softdisk appeals to the manufacturers not to under quote in a raise for top line, but to focus for profitability by improving the bottom line.
